Students, lawyers gather at SC demanding CJ's resignation

Dhaka, Aug 10, 2024 (BSS) - Protesters and a large number of Supreme Court (SC) lawyers today gathered on the SC premises demanding the resignation of the judges of the Appellate Division including Chief Justice (CJ) Obaidul Hasan.

Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the quota reform movement, said that, "If the judges of the Appellate Division, including Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan, do not resign by 1 pm, we will surround their residences."

Lawyer Barrister Nasir Uddin Ahmed Asim told BSS that, "Many judges, including the Chief Justice, conducted judicial proceedings from the party's point of view during the previous regime, which amounts to breaking their oaths. The protesters, lawyers and people of the country now demand them to step down."

Earlier, Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan called a full court meeting at 10:30 this morning to discuss how to run the court in the current situation and other various issues.

However, the full court meeting of the Supreme Court called by the Chief Justice was cancelled as the quota reform movement co-ordinator and Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan posted a Facebook status saying that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court called a full court meeting without any prior discussion with the government, and demanded to protest until they resign.
