Two dead, 36 lakh people affected as flood hits 10 districts

DHAKA, Aug 22, 2024 (BSS) - Two persons died and over 36 lakh people have been affected as the ongoing flood hit 10 districts due to onrush of upstream water and nonstop rain over the last few days.

One person died in Feni and other one in Brahmanbaria district in the flood, according latest updates on ongoing flood issued by Disaster Management and Relief Ministry.

The ongoing flood hit 495 unions under 65 upazilas in 10 districts leaving 5,86,040 families as stranded and 36,45,552 people as affected.
Feni, Cumilla, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Chattogram, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet and Lakshmipur districts have been affected in the ongoing flood since August 20.

A total of 82694 people and 7755 cattle were given shelter to 2246 shelter centers while 506 medical teams have been formed and 492 of those are working to provide treatment to affected people in the 10 flood-hit districts.

Taka 3,32,00,000 (cash), 19650 metric tons of rice and 15,000 packets of dry foods have been allotted.

Disaster Management and Relief Ministry has opened a control room for providing information and support. Control room's number is 0255101115.

Deputy commissioners of flood affected districts have been given necessary directives to work together in coordination with coordinators of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Army, medical teams and other volunteers.

Army and Navy members remain deployed for rescue activities in flood affected areas in Feni. Army sent its 160 members and 40 rescue vessels to Feni. Besides, one water treatment plant has been set up. Navy's 71 members and eight rescue vessels are operating. Besides, more vessels have been brought and BGB members have also been deployed.

Bangladesh Meteorological Department today issued an emergency warning for heavy rainfall due to active monsoon mainly in southern regions of the country including the capital and Mymensingh district in the midst of the current flood situation.

"Due to active monsoon, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, during the next 48 hours commencing 10:00 am today," the warning said.

Due to heavy rainfall, land slide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chattogram division, it added.
