DHAKA, Aug 27, 2024 (BSS) - The death toll in the devastating flood has risen to 27 as the deaths of four more people in Cumilla were reported today.

Among the deaths, 10 were in Cumilla, one in Feni, five in Chattogram, one in Khagrachhari, five in Noakhali, one in Brahmanbaria, one in Lakshmipur and three were in Cox's Bazar districts while two persons are remaining missing in Moulvibazar district.

Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik disclosed the information in a press conference at the ministry’s conference room at Secretariat this afternoon.

The number of the flood affected district remains 11. The districts are Feni, Cumilla, Chattogram, Khagrachhari, Noakhali, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Sylhet, Lakshmipur and Cox's Bazar.

The number of affected people decreased to 56,19,375 which was 57,01,204 till on Monday.

The number of marooned families also decreased to 12,07,429 which was 12,38,048 till on Monday.
Replying to a question about whether any new area is flooded due to opening of 109 gates of Farakka Barrage, Faruk E Azam said no new area has been flooded as per the information they got till now.
 
As per the updates on the overall flood situation given by the ministry, a total of 5,09,728 people took refuge at 3,886 shelter centers. A total of 34,421 cattle were also given shelter there.

The flood hit 541 unions and municipalities under 74 upazilas in the 11 districts.

A total of 620 medical teams are working to provide treatment to the affected people in the flood-hit districts.

A total of Taka 3.52 crore (cash), 20,650 metric tons of rice and 15,000 packets of dry food, Taka 35 lakh for baby food and Taka 35 lakh for fodder have been allocated for the 11 flood-hit districts.

Relief distribution activities are continued in flood affected areas from all levels including government and private initiatives.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief's control room remains open round the clock for providing information and support. The control room's number is 0255101115.

Deputy Commissioners of flood affected districts were given necessary directives to work in coordination with coordinators of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Army, Navy, Fire Service and Civil Defence, medical teams and other volunteers.

Field hospitals have been prepared in flood-hit districts for providing treatment. Physicians from the army and district civil surgeon offices are providing services. Concerned deputy commissioners have given directives to local clinics, hospitals and healthcare facilities for ensuring necessary services to flood-affected people.

Mobile network and telephone connections have been restored in flood-hit areas.

All authorities concerned have been given directives to take necessary measures for preventing waterborne diseases in the post-flood period.     

The people, who are interested to stand by the flood victims, have been urged to send money to 'Chief Adviser's Relief and Welfare Fund'.
