Govt will not allow mob justice in anyway: Mahfuj Alam

DHAKA, Sept 8, 2024 (BSS) – Chief Adviser's Special Assistant Mahfuj Alam today said the interim government will not allow mob justice in anyway, reiterating that perpetrators must be brought to justice.

“People should not punish them (cohorts of fascist). They must be brought to justice. The law will take its own course,” he said at a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy here, responding to a question.

Mahfuj said the government’s stance on mob justice is very clear. People should remain careful only to make sure that there is no compromise to hold the perpetrators accountable, he added.

The press briefing was held after a view-exchange meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and the frontline students participated in student-people revolution.

The meeting was
arranged at Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) here marking the one-month of the interim government.

About the outcomes of the meeting, Mahfuj Alam said Chief Adviser Prof Yunus expressed his views and presented his future plans before the students.

Mentioning that over 150 students from different colleges and public and private universities joined the view-exchange meeting today, he said the chief justice wanted to know reform proposals from the students and they also presented various proposals to the chief adviser.

The special assistant said they discussed how the interim government can move forward towards nation-building considering the concerns and proposals of the students.

He said Prof Yunus asked the students to write directly to him about their reform proposals.

Replying to another query on wholesale cases being filled across the country, Mahfuj said lodging wholesale cases will not be acceptable at all but justice will be ensured following due legal procedures.

Responding to a question, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said many people were killed and over 18,000 injured across the country during the student-people upsurge. The list of casualties is being prepared now, he said.

Alam said the injured people and the members of martyrs’ and victims’ families will be looked after by forming a foundation.
