DHAKA, Sept 24, 2024 (BSS) - The United Nations has extended its best wishes to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus as he attends the 79th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA).
This visit comes at a significant time for Bangladesh, as the nation celebrates 50 years of its membership with the UN.
"My best wishes to Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus as he attends the General Assembly. This year, Bangladesh celebrates its 50-year relationship with the UN," said UN Resident Coordinator in Dhaka Gwyn Lewis in a message shared on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
Bangladesh Chief Adviser, who arrived in New York on Monday night, will host a reception on Tuesday evening to commemorate Bangladesh's five decades of partnership with the global organization.
This marks Yunus' first visit to the United States as head of the Bangladesh government to participate in the UNGA.
"An historic moment when we again reminded of the importance of listening to the voices of young people," Lewis said in X.
Bangladesh officially became a full member of the United Nations on September 17, 1974.
The general debate of the 79th session opening on Tuesday (September 24) will continue through Saturday, (September 28) and conclude on Monday (September 30).
The theme for this year's General Assembly is "Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations."
