Anti-discrimination students demand termination of constitution, removal of president

DHAKA, Oct 22, 2024 (BSS) – Anti Discrimination Student Movement today staged a protest rally with a five-point demand including termination of the constitution, removal of the president Mohammed Shahabuddin and banning Chhatra League as a terrorist organization.

Addressing a rally at the Central Shaheed Minar, they also demanded declaring the last three national parliamentary elections illegal and making ‘Proclamation of Republic’ in the light of July revolution.

“The five-point demand must be implemented within this week,” said Hasnat Abdullah, one of the key coordinators of Anti Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) that led the students-people mass uprising.

If the demands are not met by Thursday, Hasnat threatened that they will go back to the street again.

“A new constitution must be formulated in the light of the spirit of July revolution terminating the current constitution. Bangladesh Chhatra League must be banned within this week as a terrorist organization,” said Hasnat Abdullah.

“President Md Shahabuddin must resign within this week. Proclamation of Republic must be announced within this week in the light of the spirit of July revelation and the state will be run based on the opinions of all functional political organizations,” he added.

Hasnat said the last three national parliamentary elections—2014, 2018 and 2024—must be declared as illegal. And the wealth of the people who became parliament members through these elections must be seized along with taking legal actions against them so that they can never take part in any national parliamentary polls, he added.

Awami League, Chhatra League, Jubo League, and all the cultural organizations and media that hold the spirit of ‘Mujibbad’ and serve fascism must be rooted out permanently from the soil of Bangladesh, said Hasnat.

Jatiya Nagorik committee will wage tougher movement countrywide along with the stakeholders, if the implementation of a new constitution is not commenced within this month after terminating the 1972’s Bakshali constitution in consultation with the national parties, said Jatiya Nagorik Committee convener Nasir Uddin Patwary.

Criticizing President Md Shahabuddin’s remarks over the resignation of ousted Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, ADSM coordinator Sarjis Alam said, “The President will have to flee the country the way Sheikh Hasina did. If any fascist tries to come out from hiding, the Chhatra-Janata will resist them unitedly.”

“The main ideology of fascism is ‘Mujibbad’. And Chhatra League has been the pioneer of establishing the fascism in the country during the Awami League’s regime. In the last 15 years, they have created an unstable situation in Bangladesh.  So, they must be banned,” said ADSM coordinator Abu Baker Majumder.

Coordinator Lutfar Rahman, coordinator Arif Sohail, coordinator Rifat Rashid and student Ashrefa Khatun, among others, also spoke at the mass gathering.
