DHAKA, Oct 24, 2024 (BSS) – The government had taken all precautionary measures in the coastal areas to deal with the super cyclonic strom ‘Dana’ located within 200 KM Odisha and West Bengal Coasts and expected to make a landfall there early Friday.
As part of the measurers, the district administrations in the coastal region have already allocated necessary relief assistance and prepared flood shelter centers for the people living in the coastal belt areas.
According to reports reaching here today from our district correspondents, In Bagherhat, the district administration held an emergency meeting and a total of 359 flood shelter centers have been kept ready for the vulnerable people of the coastal areas.
In addition to this, 800 metric tons of rice and Taka 15 lakh cash also have been distributed in the district. A total of, 3,505 volunteers and 84 medical teams have been engaged for providing necessary support to the vulnerable people of the district.
In Satkhira, necessary arrangements have been taken in the district as a total of 887 educational institutes including 156 flood shelter centers have kept ready for evacuating over 4.43lakh people.
Besides, animal food worth of Taka 5 lakh, baby food worth of Taka 5 lakh, 800 tonnes of rice and nearly Taka 7 lakh cash have already been allocated for the district.
In Borguna, district administration confirmed that it has kept 673 flood shelter centers ready so that the affected people could take shelter there during the cyclonic storm ‘Dana’.
In Bhola, necessary preparations have been taken to face any eventualities may cause due to the severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’.
A total of 889 flood shelter centers and 14,000 volunteers are being kept ready to shift the the people living in the vulnerable areas of the coastal district to the shelter centres (if required) and conducting rescue operations.
However, a total of 98 medical teams have kept ready to provide medical services to the affected people. Dry food, baby food, rice and cash been allocated to this end.
Meanwhile, the deputy commissioners of the coastal districts have taken all precautionary measures in an attempt to avoid the possible damages due to the catastrophe.
All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep seas have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
The severe cyclonic storm Dana over northwest and adjoining central Bay of Bengal moving north-northwestwards with a speed of 12 kph and it likely and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coast during midnight to tomorrow morning, according to the Indian meteorological department today.
During this time, the maximum sustained wind speed of the severe cyclonic storm is about 100-110 kmph rising to 120kph in gusts or squalls.
While the storm warning center’s latest bulletin showed that the severe cyclonic storm was centered at 12noon today about 570 kms Southwest of Chattogram port, 535kms Southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 435 kms South-Southwest of Mongla port and 435 kms South-Southwest of Payra port.
Under the peripheral effect of the severe cyclonic storm, heavy (44-88mm) to very heavy (>89mm) rainfall with gusty or squally wind may occur over North Bay, offshore islands, chars and coastal areas.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 64 km of the severe cyclonic center is about 90kph rising to 110 kph in gusts or squalls. Sea will remain high near the system center, the bulletin added.
Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’sBazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no-3 rpt 3.
Under the peripheral effect of the cyclonic storm and steep pressure gradient ,the low-lying areas of the costal districts of Satkhira, Khulna , Bagerhat, Borguna, Barishal, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Bhola, Laxmipur, Noakhali, FEni, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar and their offshore Island and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 2-3 feet height above normal astronomical tide, it said.
