Dhaka summons Verma following attack on Bangladesh mission in Agartala

DHAKA, Dec 03, 2024 (BSS) – Bangladesh foreign ministry today summoned Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Pranay Verma following the attack on Bangladesh Assistant High Commission premises in Agartala on Monday.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh also suspended all visa and consular services at its Assistant High Commission in Agartala, Tripura, with immediate effect, following the attack.

While asked for comments on summoning the Indian envoy, foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain told BSS, “He (Verma) has been asked to come”.

The Indian high commissioner was summoned by acting foreign secretary Reaz Hamidullah at the foreign affairs ministry.

“We are willing to engage with the interim government of Bangladesh, we want to maintain constant stable constructive relationship with Bangladesh,” Verma told reporters when he was leaving the ministry.

Verma said that India is interested to work with Bangladesh government to fulfil the two countries’ shared aspiration for peace, security and development.

The envoy described the relationship between the two countries as "multifaceted and wide-ranging," mentioning that they cannot sit with one issue or agenda.
He also said there are many interdependencies and they want to build on that for mutual benefits.

In a statement on Monday, Bangladesh foreign ministry deeply resent the violent demonstration and attack by a large group of protesters of the Hindu Sangharsh Samity on the premises of its Agartala mission office.

Bangladesh government underscored its concern about the security of its diplomatic mission and urged Indian authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of the premises and its personnel.

"This particular act in Agartala stands in violation of the inviolability of diplomatic missions, as the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961, asks for,” it said in the statement.
