DHAKA, Jan 15, 2025 (BSS) - Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul today hoped that the interim government would be able to accomplish all the reform tasks within its tenure.

He expressed this optimism while speaking at a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy here after the submission of the reports of the four reform commissions constituted by the interim government.

Describing the four phases of the governments' work plan over reforms, Dr Asif Nazrul said the commissions will submit their reports with recommendations and talks will be held over reforms based on proposals of the commissions.

The national consensus commission, led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, has been formed to initiate the talks, he said, adding that in the third phase, the government will formulate necessary laws and rules and those will be implemented in fourth phase.

"We expect that we will be able to accomplish all these tasks (within our tenure). But it depends mainly on the consensus of the political parties - how much reforms they want," the law adviser said.

Dr Asif said Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus in his address to nation on December 16 said it may be possible to hold the election by the end of 2025 after completing minor reforms, while it may take at least six more months if the expected level of reforms is done.

When the talks will begin with the political parties based on proposals of the reform commissions, the government will try to identify what are the minimum reforms and what are the expected reforms, he added.

Speaking at the press briefing, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said the reports of the reform commissions were submitted today and the commission chiefs will sit together to decide their next course of actions. 

To this end, she said, the government will extend the tenure of the commissions for one more month by issuing gazette notifications.

Mentioning that the full reports of the six commissions will be available by January 31, Rizwana said the independent commissions will now do the task of coordination.

In view of the demands and expectations of the people and political parties, she said, the government will be able to give a roadmap over reforms in one month.

Replying to a question, the environment adviser said all political parties gave their opinions and the commission reports were prepared considering their opinions.

She said Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has made it clear that the next commission would be the "Political Consensus Commission," led by him.

Rizwana said once all reach a political consensus, there will be no question of legitimacy.

Responding to another question, she said those involved in violence and killing during the July uprising would be brought to justice in a transparent way.

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain and Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also were present at the press briefing.
