DHAKA, Jan 16, 2025 (BSS) - Fact-checking body Rumor Scanner has revealed that an old video of being tortured in India is propagated as an recent incident of Bangladesh.
In a report published on its website on Wednesday, the fact checking watchdog said recently, a video with the caption "Dr. Yunus seized power, Bangladesh became a terrifying state. He and his gang of goons are torturing the people"' was circulated on some Indian X (former Twitter) accounts.
It is claimed that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has seized power and established a reign of terror in Bangladesh and his gang of goons is torturing the people.
The investigation by the Rumor Scanner team revealed that the video of being tortured was not from Bangladesh rather it was an old incident of West Bengal, India.
In this regard, a reverse image search found a video similar to the video discussed in a post dated July 9, 2024 on the X account named BJP West Bengal.
The caption of the post shows that the video is of Jayant Singh, a close aide of Trinamool Congress MLA Madan Mitra, torturing a woman at the Taltala Club in Kamarhati. It is to be noted that Kamarhati is a city in North 24 Pargana district of the Indian state of West Bengal.
Later, through a relevant keyword search, a report was found on July 9, 2024, titled '2 Arrested After Gruesome Video Of TMC MLA's 'Aide' Beating Woman In Bengal Goes Viral' published in the online version of Indian media Zee News. The images used in the report are similar to the video circulated in the discussed claim.
The report shows that a video of a group of people assaulting a girl in North 24 Pargana district of West Bengal has gone viral on social media.
Barrackpore Police took immediate action and arrested two suspects identified from the video footage. The circulated video is believed to be about two years old.
The video in question is similar to the image used in a report published on July 9, 2024 in another Indian media outlet, News 18, titled 'Political Row Over Another Flogging Video From Bengal; Case Filed Against TMC Leader's Close Aide'. In addition, the report reveals that this is an incident from Kamarhati, West Bengal.
Reviewing the above points, it is clear that the incident in the video being circulated in the disputed claim is not from Bangladesh but from the Indian state of West Bengal.
And this is not a recent incident. The video went viral on social media on July 9, 2024. According to information received in the media, the video was recorded about two years ago.
Therefore, an old video from India has been circulated claiming that torture occurred during the interim government of Bangladesh; which is completely false.
