Indian robbery incident's video propagated as Bangladeshi one: Rumor Scanner

DHAKA, Feb 12, 2025 (BSS) - Fact check body Rumor Scanner in an investigation found that a video of Robbery in Indian state of Bihar is being propagated as an incident of Bangladesh.

In a report published on its website yesterday, the fact checking watchdog said recently, a video of a few masked miscreants robbing a petrol pump area with weapons has been circulated as an incident in Bangladesh.

The video was circulated on social media with the caption “Openly carrying arms in hand. Look at the so-called students and the devils supported by the illegally occupying government! No one is safe in this country in the day or at night!”

The Rumor Scanner team's investigation found that the video being circulated is not of an incident in Bangladesh but of an armed robbery incident in Bihar, India.

A search for the video as well found the same video in a post on February 7 by an X account called Hate Detector. The post also included another CCTV footage of the incident from a different angle. The video's caption stated that it was from Bihar, India.

A video of the incident was later found on Indian media outlet NDTV. NDTV confirmed that the video was from Bihar.

According to a report by another Indian media outlet, Free Press Journal, the incident took place on February 5 at the Puja Petrol Pump in Tiri area of Baijnathpur police station in Saharsa, Bihar, India. The report states that four armed miscreants robbed ?21,000 and fled after threatening to shoot.

Therefore, the video of a robbery incident in Bihar, India, has been circulated as an incident in Bangladesh, which is misleading.
