DHAKA, Mar 17, 2025 (BSS) - Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today said since election is approaching, pressure will mount on police but they should remain strong in performing their duties.

"As the election is approaching, various problems will emerge and pressure will come from different quarters...but you (police) should stay firm," he said while addressing a special meeting with senior police officers on law and order issues at his office.

Prof Yunus said, “the government is stating that the polls would be held within December this year. So, all the things within its ability should be accomplished before that time.”
"We will do how much reform we need. There will be no benefit waiting for someone to this end," he said.

The Chief Adviser asked police to perform their duties following the law so that the reign of darkness would never return to the country.

Highlighting the importance of police force, he said a new Bangladesh could not be built ignoring police as they are the front liners.

Prof Yunus listened to field level police officials and gave necessary directives on law and order, saying that the interim government has limited time before the upcoming polls.

He said police are the most important unit and any government initiative ultimately depends on them to create the necessary environment for implementation.

“Whatever the government wants to do, it needs to be done through the police," he said.

Without ensuring law and order, the Chief Adviser said, the governance, democracy, human rights and citizens' rights cannot be upheld.

Assuring that he would try his best to resolve the problems currently facing by police, Prof Yunus said police should prove through their activities that they are playing important role in building a New Bangladesh.

“Police should be the friend of commoners,” the Chief Adviser said asking police to work sincerely to protect women and minorities and ensure their rights.
 
He also asked police to take steps to prevent propaganda spreading against the country.

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Home Secretary Nasimul Gani and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam also spoke on the occasion.

Among the field-level officials, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Chattogram Range Ahsan Habib Palash and Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rajshahi Farzana Islam spoke.

About 127 SPs and senior officers joined the special meeting.
