JU anti sexual harassment complaint committee office inaugurated

SAVAR, Jan 4, 2023 (BSS) - An office of Jahangirnagar University (JU) anti sexual harassment complaint committee set up at old administrative building on the campus was inaugurated today.

Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC) Member Professor Abu Taher formally inaugurated the office around 10am at a function at JU Senate Hall in the Old Administration building.

JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Nurul Alam presided over the function while JU Pro-VC Professor Sheikh Md Manzurul Huq and Treasurer Professor Dr Rasheda Akhtar spoke at the event as special guests.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Abu Taher emphasized on making the university stakeholders aware of the sexual harassment by holding seminars, round table and awareness programmes on the issue.
 
"Researches should be carried out on sexual abuse in universities since the offence can be committed by both boys and girls. We have to consider both the aspects," he said.

Noting that the JU authorities are following a 'zero tolerance' policy against the sexual harassment, Dr Nurul Alam said, "We are aware about the issue".

He said that the university authority will consider allocating budget for anti sexual harassment complaint committee so that the committee can run its activities smoothly.
 
"We are working to ensure so that no one can be victim of sexual harassment," the JU VC added.

Anti Sexual Harassment Complaint Committee Chief Professor Dr Jebunnessa said that the JU was the first among the educational institutions to form this committee.
 
"Today, the first office of this committee has been inaugurated here, which took the university another step forward," she added.

Appreciating the university authorities for taking necessary steps to help the committee work against sexual harassment, Dr Jebunnessa said, "It is my pleasure to open the committee office today within one year and two days since I took charge as the committee chief".

She added "We all the committee members are committed and determined to work with impartiality".
