Universities can resume classes from Oct 15 after vaccinating teachers, students: UGC chairman

DHAKA, Aug 26, 2021 (BSS) - All universities can resume in-person classes from October 15 only after vaccinating all their students and teachers.

"To resume academic activities from October 15, university authorities have to complete vaccination of all students, teachers and staff by September 15, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah told BSS Thursday afternoon.

The decision comes following a virtual meeting of the technical committee with the education ministry and the primary and mass education ministry this afternoon. The meeting was presided by Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.

Universities will be allowed to open dorms only once the vaccination of all students and teachers is completed, the UGC Chairman said, adding that no university will be allowed to resume academic activities in-person without ensuring inoculation of all the students.

Authorities of all the university have been asked to take necessary measures to make sure that every student and teacher is vaccinated before resuming academic activities, he added.

After reopening dorms, health guidelines and physical distancing
have to be ensured by the respective university authorities, said the UGC chairman.

State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Zakir Hossen, Deputy Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury, top officials of Secondary and Higher Education Division, and Technical and Madrasah Education Division, chairman and members of University Grants Commission attended the meeting .

Chairman of the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19, Vice Chancellors of public universities, top officials of Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Directorate of Primary Education, and education board chairmen also attended the meeting.
