Zia destroyed country's election system: Amu

DHAKA, Aug 6, 2023 (BSS) - Awami League (AL) Advisory Council Member and 14-party alliance spokesperson Amir Hossain Amu today said BNP founder military dictator Ziaur Rahman had destroyed the country's voting system by holding a 'yes-no' plebiscite.

"Military dictator Ziaur Rahman violated people's right to vote by holding a 'yes or no' vote," he told a discussion of Sammilita Jatiya Jote (UNA) as the chief guest in the auditorium of Jatiya Press Club here.

Amu said the people remain united against local and foreign conspiracies centering the upcoming general elections.

"The people are the main strength of Awami League and we will face any conspiracy with the people's strength," said Amu.

He also said next parliamentary elections will be held as per the country's constitutional provision.

The alliance spokesperson urged the countrymen to remain united against cohorts of the killers of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and those who destroyed constitution.

BNP destroyed four fundamental principles of constitution and created militancy in the country, he added.

Sammilita Jatiya Jote leaders announced that they will work in unison under the leadership of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina in order to protect the constitutional continuity, continue the democratic process, and protect the stability and development of the country.

Amu expressed sincere thanks and gratitude on behalf of Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and welcomed the decision of alliance of 58 parties named Sammilita Jatiya Jote (UNA) for the sake of constitutional and development of the country.
