Nine dead, 30 hurt in Cameroon coach crash: authorities

YAOUNDE, Aug 10, 2023 (BSS/AFP) - Nine people were killed and 30 hurt Wednesday when a coach overturned in Cameroon, the governor of the northern region of Adamaoua said.

The vehicle left the capital Yaounde on Tuesday for Ngaoundere some 450 kilometres (270 miles) to the north when it overturned around noon (1100 GMT) at Mbe, governor Kildadi Taguieke Boukar told AFP.

Boukar, who said speeding but also the state of the highway could have caused the crash, added the injured were taken to hospital at Ngaoundere.
Fourteen people were killed and dozens injured in another crash in Cameroon, in the country's east, three months ago.

Some 7,000 people die in road accidents every year in Cameroon, with the World Health Organization estimating a road fatality rate of 30 per 100,000 inhabitants, well above its west African neighbours, in latest data from 2018.

Those figures are around seven times higher than official data with the transport ministry last year reporting 963 fatalities for 2021.
