Debate helps create intellect-driven society: Hasan

CHATTOGRAM, Sept 8, 2023 (BSS) - Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the government doesn't aim to make only infrastructural development rather it wants to build a developed, prosperous, intellect-driven and humane state by 2041.

" . . . And debate helps create intellect-driven society. So, there is no alternative to practice debate," he told an award distribution ceremony of the first inter-school English debate competition as the chief guest organized by Bangladesh Television (BTV)'s Chattogram Centre at its studio here.

Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary, said earlier there was no debate competition here because it is seen that government is often criticized in debate.

Upon taking the charge of information minister, he introduced television debate competition as his government always welcomes rational debate, Hasan said.

Calling upon the students to prepare themselves to cope with the challenge of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), Hasan said, the AL government started implementation of its vision of Digital Bangladesh after assuming office following the victory in 2008 general elections to meet the challenges of 4IR.

BTV Chattogram Center General Manager Nur Anwar Hossain Ranju presided over the meeting while Ekushey Padak recipient journalist Daily Azadi Editor MA Malek, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Tofail Islam and Chattogram University's English Department chairman Sukanta Bhattacharya also spoke.
 
Faujdarhat Cadet College in Chattogram became champion beating Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College in the final round of the competition participated by the country's 64 schools.

Later, Hasan Mahmud distributed prizes among the winners.
