DHAKA, Sept 10, 2023 (BSS) - Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury today called for increasing the involvement of lawmakers in different climate parliament summits to tackle the adverse impact of climate change.
"The recently held 'Regional Climate Summit 2023' can play an important role in addressing the impact of climate change. The engagement of members of parliament in different Climate Parliament summits should be increased," she said.
Dr Shirin made the remarks when South Asia Director of Climate Parliament Dr Mukul Sharma and representatives of USAID, South Asia, paid a courtesy call on her at her office in the JS Bhaban here, said a press release.
The ideas and models presented and discussed at the 'Regional Climate Summit' are really commendable, she said, adding that different models discussed at the summit can be implemented by increasing regional cooperation beyond countries and borders.
In order to find sustainable solutions to deal with the adverse impacts of climate change, Dr Shirin said, the Climate Parliament should increase its involvement with different stakeholders, including members of parliament, parliamentary standing committees and ministries.
Mukul Sharma expressed his hope to hold a climate summit on a large scale with the participation of parliamentarians under the supervision of the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad.
Climate Parliament Policy Director Dr Sumedha Basu, USAID South Asia Energy Specialist Monali Hazra, Research Triangle Institute chief Rakesh Goyal and senior officials of the parliament were present at the meeting, among others.
