NEW DELHI, Oct 19, 2023 (BSS) - Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi yesterday
celebrated the Sheikh Russel Day in a befitting manner marking the 60th
birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's youngest
son Shaheed (martyred) Sheikh Russel.
To mark the day, the mission organized children and juvenile art competition
along with screening a documentary on Sheikh Russel, who was brutally killed
at the fateful night of August 15, 1975 along with Bangabandhu and most of
his family members.
The day's programmes began with placing wreaths at the portrait of
Bangabandhu and Sheikh Russel and concluded after offering a munajat seeking
divine blessings of Shaheed Russel and peace, progress and prosperity of the
country.
A discussion on life of Sheikh Russel was organized after reading out
messages from President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
marking the occasion.
Valiant freedom fighter Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Quazi Sazzad Ali Zahir, Bir Pratik,
and Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India Md Nural Islam took part
in the discussion on Shaheed Sheikh Russel, also the youngest brother of
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Later, the acting high commissioner along with his spouse and children of
officers, employees and staff cut a cake marking the Sheikh Russel Day.
A documentary on Sheikh Russel was screened and a theme song was played on
the occasion.
The day was also celebrated at Bangladesh deputy and assistant missions in
Kolkata, Mumbai, Agartala and Guwahati in a befitting manner.
Sheikh Russel was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu
Bhaban at Dhanmondi road number 32 in the capital.
Sheikh Russel was named after Bangabandhu's favorite writer, renowned
philosopher and Noble laureate Bertrand Russell, by his father Bangabandhu
himself and mother Sheikh Fazilatun Nesa Mujib.
