DHAKA, Nov 2, 2023 (BSS) - Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has built a new partnership with the UK's Centre of Expertise on Green Cities and Infrastructure aiming to address its challenges of urban development.
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh Sarah Cooke and DNCC Mayor Md Atiqul Islam signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at a function here on be behalf of their respective sites, said a press release of British High Commission in Dhaka.
The Centre of Expertise on Green Cities and Infrastructure is a new UK Government initiative to support fast growing cities tackle the challenges of urban development. Potential areas of technical assistance include traffic and transportation, urban planning, pollution, infrastructure and smart cities.
In Dhaka, Transport for London will provide training and advisory services on traffic and transportation to DNCC and other relevant government agencies.
The British High Commissioner delivered remarks to the guests present.
Speaking on the occasion, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said Dhaka, like many urban areas around the world, is a major source of economic growth and poverty eradication.
Like all cities, Dhaka's geographical concentration generates both major opportunity and challenges - not least, all the traffic which we all spend much time sitting in, she said.
In a world grappling with rapid urbanisation, this partnership will bring UK expertise on transport planning to the DNCC and help it to turn into a smarter, greener, and more resilient city for all its inhabitants, the UK envoy said.
She said the United Kingdom has a long-standing history of contributing to urban development in Bangladesh including through the National Urban Poverty Reduction Program (NUPRP).
"This new partnership will continue this collaboration to support the authorities to enhance city management by addressing the challenges of traffic congestion, pollution, and integrated transport planning," she added.
