DHAKA, Nov 16, 2023 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today upheld a High Court order granting bail to Jagannath University (JnU) student Khadijatul Kobra in two separate cases filed under the Digital Security Act.
A full bench Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan scrapped pleas from the state challenging the bail and passed the order.
Due to the order from the apex court, there is no longer any legal bar to release her.
In October 2020, two separate cases under the Digital Security Act (DSA) were filed with city's Kalabagan and Newmarket police stations against Khadija for publishing derogatory and false remarks on the government.
On September 17 in 2021, Khadija was arrested by New Market Thana Police as Dhaka Cyber Tribunal issued arrest warrants against her.
Khadija pleaded for bail in the High court after her bail was denied by a lower court. The HC granted her bail on February 16 this year which was eventually stayed by a chamber bench of the Appellate Division.
