DHAKA, Nov 16, 2023 (BSS) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Md Shahab Uddin today said Bangladesh expects that the upcoming COP-28 UAE must deliver positive outcome.
He said this when British Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka Matt Cannel met him at the Secretariat here.
The minister said operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund and the funding arrangements, agreement on the framework for the global goal on adaptation, strengthen 2030 mitigation targets to align with the 1.5 degree Celsius temperature goal; and scale up finance for LDCs to implement NAP and NDCs are to be ensured in the COP-28.
"Apart from the UAE government, we hope that the Government of the UK will also play a very active role in bringing together all countries to deliver the way forward and demonstrate solidarity on climate action," he told the envoy.
Addressing the UK Government as one of the trusted friends of Bangladesh in combating climate change, Shahab Uddin said Bangladesh, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is pursuing a low-carbon green development policy in its journey towards sustainable development.
He said Bangladesh requires international cooperation in implementation of NAP, NDC, MCCP and in energy transition, conservation of biodiversity, wetlands and forest.
Matt Cannel said climate actions, including operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund, are their mutual priorities.
He said the incumbent UK government is strongly committed to climate actions. Mutual cooperation between the two countries will be stronger following the Bangladesh-UK climate accord, he added.
Environment Secretary Dr Farhina Ahmed, Additional Secretary (Environment) of the ministry Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik, Additional Secretary (Development) Dr Fahmida Khanom, and Anna Ballance (Climate and Environment Adviser) and Marjan Nur (Policy Manager) of the British High Commission were also present at the meeting.
