DHAKA, Nov 22, 2023 (BSS) - A court here today convicted and sentenced nine leaders and activists of BNP including former president of its student wing Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) to 3.3 years jail in a case lodged over torching of vehicles and carrying out attack on police in 2013.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam pronounced the judgment today, sentencing the nine men including former JCD president Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel to 3.3 years jail and fined Taka 5,000 each.
The other convicts were former general secretary of Paltan thana unit of JCD Ikbal Hossain, former Swechchhasebak Dal leader Shahadat Hossain, former Jubo Dal leader Leon Hossain, Uttam Kumar, Bhashani Jahangir, Mizanur Rahman, Ariful Haque and Rubel.
The court issued arrest warrant against the convicts in absentia.
According to the case documents, the convicts on November 3, 2013, brought out a procession in Paltan VIP Road area and torched a private car. As policemen tried to douse the flame, the convicts started hurling brickbats and attacked with hockey stick. The attackers later torched a staff bus of Sonali Bank in front of Rajuk Bhaban.
Police later filed the case with Paltan Police Station and filed charge-sheet on November 18, 2014.
