DHAKA, Dec 13, 2023 (BSS) - The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today upheld a High Court suspending an order removing Awami League nominated candidate for Cox'sbazar-1 (Chakaria-Pekua) constituency, Salahuddin Ahmed's name from the list of loan defaulters by the Money Loan Court.
A five-judge Appellate Division Bench led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan passed the order today which eventually bars Ahmed from contesting the national polls.
However, the defence attorneys' have said that they will go to the Election Commission (EC) regarding the candidacy.
Earlier on December 3, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) canceled the nomination papers of Awami League candidate Ahmed as his name was on the loan defaulter's list.
The Money Loan court removed him from the list of defaulters as he made an application.
Janata Bank filed a writ with the High Court seeking suspension of this order. When the High Court stayed the order, he applied to the Appellate Division seeking stay of the High Court's order.
