Eminent poet Abu Bakar Siddique passes away

KHULNA, Dec 28, 2023 (BSS)-Bangla Academy Literary Award-winner poet and writer Abu Bakar Siddique today died of old-age complications while undergoing treatment at Khulna City Medical College Hospital here in the city.

He was 91.

He left behind one son and five daughters. His daughter Bidisha Ershad was the wife of late president Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

Eminent poet and writer Abu Bakr Siddique had been suffering from various old age complications for a long time.

He was also fiction writer, rhymer, novelist, short story writer and critic.

Earlier on Wednesday (December 27) evening, he was admitted to the hospital.

The poet was living in the house of his younger sister at Munsipara area in the city for a long time.

He was born on August 19, 1934 at his grandfather’s residence in Gotapara village of Bagerhat district.

Abu Bakar Siddique received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1988.

He passed the Secondary School Certificate from Bagerhat Secondary Government High School in 1952, Higher Secondary from Bagerhat Government P C College in 1954 and Graduation from the same college in 1956. He got admitted in the Department of Bangla of the Dhaka University and obtained his master's degree in 1958.

He published over 20 books of poetry including ‘’Dhabal Dudher Swargram’ (1969), ‘Binidra Kaler Vela (1976)’, ‘Hea Loksabhyata (1984), ‘Manush Tomar Bixhaty Din’ (1986). There is also a rhyming book called ‘Hottamala (2001)’.

His namaj-e janaja was held at Shahid Hadis Park in the city today.
