MANILA, Jan, 20, 2024 (BSS/Xinhua) - Two people, including a two-year-old girl, were killed and 15 others injured after a passenger jeepney's brake failed, causing it to hit several vehicles in the Philippines' Laguna province, south of Manila, police said Saturday.
The accident occurred past 5 p.m. local time on Friday in Nagcarlan town while the jeepney was negotiating a descending road, police said.
The wayward jeepney then hit a tricycle, an e-bike, a sports utility vehicle, and a truck along its path. It also rammed into a parked private jeep and two motorcycles on the roadside before it stopped.
A 45-year-old man, who was crossing the street, and a woman, passenger of the e-bike, died while on the way to a local hospital, police added.
Police detained the driver of the jeepney.
Elongated and flatbed passenger jeepneys are the most popular mode of public transport in the Philippines. These iconic vehicles have been plying the Philippine streets since World War II.
However, many accidents in the country are blamed on these poorly maintained vehicles that are made up of second-hand car parts.
