DIFE appeals against Labour Appellate Tribunal's order staying Dr Yunus's conviction

DHAKA, Feb 4, 2024 (BSS) - Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) today filed a plea against Labour Appellate Tribunal's order that stayed six-month jail sentence of Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and three others in a case filed against them for violating labour law.

Senior lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan filed the plea for DIFE with the concerned wing of the High Court Division.

Labour Appellate Tribunal on January 28 allowed Dr Yunus bail in the case and stayed the Labour Court judgment against the four.

Judge Sheikh Merina Sultana of Dhaka's 3rd Labour Court on January 1 convicted and sentenced Grameen Telecom Chairman and Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, director and former managing director Md Ashraful Hasan, members of Board of Directors Nur Jahan Begum and Md Shahjahan, to six-month jail.

DIFE Inspector Arifuzzaman filed the case on September 9, 2021.

According to the case documents, a team of the DIFE went on an inspection to the Grameen Telecom and found the violations of labour laws like not regularizing 101 staff, not establishing a welfare fund for the labourers, and not paying five percent of the company's dividends to the workers, among others.
