DRU pays homage to Language Movement martyrs

DHAKA, Feb 21, 2024 (BSS) - Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement on the occasion of 'Shaheed Dibash' (Martyrs Day) and the International Mother Language Day.

President Syed Shukur Ali Shuvo and General Secretary Mohi Uddin led DRU in paying respect to the Language Movement martyrs by placing wreaths at the altar of Central Shaheed Minar here in the early hours of today.

Vice-president Shafiqul Islam Shamim, joint general secretary Md Mizanur Rahman, finance secretary Md Zakir Hossain, organizing secretary Khalid Saifullah, publicity and publication secretary Sushanta Kumar Saha, information technology and training secretary Md Rashim Mollah, entertainment secretary Mohammad Salimullah Mejbah, members Muhibullah Muhib, Delwar Hossain Mahin, Md Shafiqul Islam and former organizing secretary Abdullah Al Kafi of the DRU were present at the time.

The day, February 21, marks the martyrdom of valiant sons of Bangladesh for establishing Bangla as the state language of then-East Pakistan in 1952.

The Ekushey February is the foundation of independent Bangladesh and the foundation of Bangladesh was laid through the Language Movement of Ekushey February under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The day is also being observed around the world as UNESCO recognised February 21 as the International Mother Language Day since November 17, 1999.
