First session of 12th Jatiya Sangsad Prorogued

SANGSAD BHABAN, Mar 5, 2024 (BSS) - The first session of 12th parliament was prorogued on Tuesday after twenty-two sittings as the session started on January 30.
 
The Jatiya Sangsad's first session of the current 2024 year was convened after formation of the new government led by the ruling Awami League during the general election held on January 7, 2024.

Before reading out the prorogation order of the President, Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presented an address of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while attending an inauguration of the Martyrs memorial plaque at Mirpur in Dhaka on December 22, 1972.
 
The speech of Bangabandhu was collected from the Bangladesh Betar as the duration of the address was 8 minutes 40 seconds.
 
Jatiya Sangsad Leader Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered her valedictory speech at the closing of the session. Leader of the Opposition Golam Mohammad Quader also spoke.

 Earlier, the parliament unanimously endorsed the general discussion on a thanksgiving motion on the President's speech which was raised by ruling party Chief Whip Noor-E Alam Chowdhury as President M Shahbuddin gave address on the outset of the session on January 30.

The discussion was held for long thirty-nine hours and a total of 269 lawmakers from the ruling Awami League and the opposition Jatiya Party participated in the discussion.

Fifty parliamentary standing committees were formed while twenty-three parliamentary standing committees also were reconstructed during the session.
 
Along with enactment of the laws, two bills were passed during the twenty-two working session.
 
Along with the legal procedure, a total of 250 important notices were received while 15 notices were adopted and nine of them were discussed in the session under section 71.
 
A total of 86 questions were received where 45 were available for the prime minister's question and answer session and 1,822 for other ministers were received and 1,080 were answered by the ministers of the different ministries during the session.
 
Before reading out the prorogation order, the deputy speaker thanked all MPs of treasury and opposition benches.
 
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury also thanked all MPs, officials, journalists, law enforcers and fire service and civil defense personnel for their services rendered for smoothly holding the parliament session.
