JAMALPUR, June 28, 2021 (BSS)- Jute cultivation has been increased in the district due to favourable weather conditions during the current Kharip-1 season
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office, farmers cultivated jute on 30,350 hectares of land which was 1,200 hectares more than the previous year.
This year, the production target of jute fiber has been set at 3,67,448 tonnes in the district.
Farmers of the district cultivated four varieties of jute this year.
They cultivated local variety on 2,325 hectares of land with a production target of 19,762 tonnes, Tosha variety on 27,428 hectares of land with a production target of 3,42,850 tonnes, Mesta variety on 74 hectares of land with a production target of 651 tonnes and Kenaf variety on 523 hectares of land with a production target of 4,184 tonnes, the DAE sources said.
The office said farmers have brought a vast amount of land under the jute cultivation in Islampur upazila. In the upazila, farmers have cultivated jute on 10,540 hectares of land.
Besides, they cultivated jute on 5,000 hectares of land in Dewanganj, 3,750 hectares in Sarishabari, 5,816 hectares in Jamalpur sadar upazila, 3,290 hectares in Madarganj , 2,205 hectares in Bakshiganj and 1,770 hectares of land in Melandah upazila.
Training Officer of the DAE Zakia Sultana said jute cultivation increased this year due to various motivational and subsidized programmes of the government and fair prices. If the weather remains well farmers will get a good yield of jute this year, she added.
