DHAKA, June 7, 2024 (BSS) - Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury today said former Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith's contribution to building prosperous Bangladesh is unforgettable as he had involved people in the fields of politics, economy, environment and sustainable development.
He said Muhith had innovation in every budget, while child budget, public private partnership (PPP) and universal pension scheme are the products of his thought.
Saber Hossain made the remarks while addressing a reminiscence meeting and unveiling of souvenir-2 on AMA Muhith.
The meeting was arranged marking the second death anniversary of the former finance minister at Institution of Diploma Engineers, Bangladesh (IDEB) in city's Kakrail this evening.
Speaking as the chief guest, Saber Hossain said Muhith was the first president of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa) as he realised the importance of environment and protecting the biodiversity.
"Muhith's contribution was immense in the field of independence too, while he presented the discrimination of Pakistan through a report. His political wisdom was unparallel. Electoral reforms, including transparent ballot boxes, were brought in 2001 through his writing Rigged Elections," he said.
The environment minister said the late finance minister had realised the need for having research cell and think-tanks in political parties.
"He (Muhith) tried to involve youth in sports, including football and cricket. He loved the country. He could see the future and could tell the truth. Research should be carried out on the life of this multi-talented person," he said.
Chaired by eminent economist and AMA Muhith Trust president Prof Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, the meeting was addressed, among others, by state minister for expatriate welfare and oversees employment Dr Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, former foreign minister AK Abdul Momen, former planning minister MA Mannan, founder and chairman of Bishwa Sahitya Kendra Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, former principal secretary Najibur Rahman, former principal secretary Md Abdul Karim, former finance secretary Muslim Chowdhury and AMA Muhith Trust member secretary Alauddin Al Azad.
