IGP Abdullah Al-Mamun gets extension for another year

DHAKA, July 5, 2024 (BSS) - The government has extended the tenure of incumbent Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun by another year.

Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification in this regard this (Friday) afternoon.
 
On 30 September 2022, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun first took the charge as the country's 31st IGP. Later, he was appointed on contractual basis for a period of one and a half years from January 12, 2023 to July 11, 2024.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was born on January 12, 1964 in Srihail village of Shalla upazila under Sunamganj. Mamun. He holds a Master's degree in Sociology from Chittagong University. He is father of two sons and a daughter.

His wife is an associate professor at Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College in Dhaka.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun joined as assistant superintendent of police (ASP) on December 20, 1989, as an officer of 1986 and eighth batch of BCS (Police) cadre.

He served as the director general of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) from April 15, 2020. He was later promoted to the post of Additional IGP in May 2021. He has also served as the DIG of Dhaka range.

Apart from this, Mamun served at the Police Headquarters, Metropolitan Police, Armed Police Battalion and various important units of various districts. He has made an outstanding contribution to global peacekeeping by working in UN peacekeeping missions.

Mamun has been awarded the President's Police Medal (PPM) once, and the Bangladesh Police Medal (BPM) twice in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the force.

This was the first record of extension of any IGP's tenure twice.
