Freedom fighters joined Liberation War for secular state: Obaidul Muktadir

KHULNA, July 07, 2024 (BSS)-Public Works Minister Freedom Fighter R A M Ubaidul Muktadir Chowdhury has said that We, the freedom fighters, joined the Liberation War, responding the call of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, for a secular and discrimination free country.

In response to the call of Bangabandhu, we fought for a discrimination free democratic country, where there will be no differences among the people, he made these remarks at the meeting with the leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) at a club here last night.

Marking the 75th founding anniversary (Hirok Joyonti) of Bangladesh Awami League, Khulna city unit of AL organized the meeting at a city club with it’s president KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque in the chair.

A vested quarter of people want to make discrimination using religious beliefs and sectarianism in our country, he said, adding that we will never allow any space for discrimination, sectarianism and conspiracies here.

The minister also said that before the Liberation War, we were deprived of human rights.

 The people of the then east Pakistan supported the six-point movement of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the Bangladesh Awami League gained victory in the movement, he added.

Pakistani military rulers refused to hand over the power to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after achieving landslide victory of AL led by Bangabandhu, the minister said adding that the AL gained the absolute majority in the general elections of the National Assembly of Pakistan held in 1970.

Later, the Bangalees (excepting a small section of anti-liberation forces) joined the Liberation War following the declaration of freedom in the historic 7th March speech of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the minister added.

Bangabandhu's nephew and local Member of Parliament (MP) Sheikh Salahuddin Jewel spoke as guest of honour at the meeting while central organizing secretary of AL SM Kamal Hossain, MP, spoke as the main speaker.

Vice President of Women's Awami League Professor Runu Iqbal Bither spoke at the meeting as a special guest while Awami League General Secretary MDA Babul Rana conducted the meeting.

Among others, the meeting was addressed by former parliament member Mizanur Rahman Mizan, AL leaders Mallik Abid Hossain Kabir, freedom fighter Sheikh Shahidul Islam, freedom fighter Moqbul Hossain Mintu, president and general secretary of 36 wards and other leaders and activists of the associate bodies were present on the occasion.
