2 bodies recovered, 3 missing after dredger capsize in Bhola

BHOLA, July 9, 2024 (BSS) - Bodies of two workers were recovered after a  dredger capsized in the Meghna river under  Sadar  upazila of the district while three more workers remain missing in the incident.

A team of divers of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) recovered the bodies from the cabin of the sunken dredger on Tuesday morning.

The deceased are Nur Alam and Md. Siam, residents of Bagharhat village of Paschim Ilisha Union of Sadar Upazila. However, three others are missing in the incident, Joint Director of Naval Conservation and Management Department of Barishal BIWTA Md. Solim said.

Police and locals said that the sand dredger named ‘Afsana’ sank in the Meghna River near Kachia Union in Bhola sometime Saturday night. It is believed that the dredger may have sunk after being hit by a lighter vessel carrying cargo during the night. Five people including the driver could not get out at that time.

“We are trying to recover the bodies of three missing people. However, the sunken dredger has not yet been recovered,” said Solim.
