Teacher’s delegation-govt officials hold fruitful discussion

DHAKA, July 13, 2024 (BSS) - The delegation of university teachers who have been on strike over the Prottoy scheme said that today's meeting with the government officials including Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and bridge Minister Obaidul Quader has been fruitful and satisfactory.

"Our discussion was satisfactory and fruitful. We had an open discussion on our three-point demands, including the cancellation of "Prottoy" under the universal pension scheme. However, after talking with the teachers we will take our next decision", said Prof Nizamul Hoque Bhuiyan, Secretary general of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association after the one-and-a-half-hour meeting.
 
However, before making the next decision, the ongoing teachers strike including observing work abstention will be continued and there will be no academic activity, including classes and exams, General Secretary of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) Prof Zeenat Huda told BSS.
 
The meeting between teachers and the government officials took place at the office of AL president at Dhanmondi at 11 am this morning.
 
Quader was accompanied by Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury, PM's advisor on education and culture Begum Shamsun Naher, state minister for education Shamsun Nahar Chapa, AL joint general secretaries Mahbubul Alam Hanif and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, and AL office secretary also special assistant to PM Biplab Barua.

President of Bangladesh University Teachers' Association Federation (FBUTA) Prof Akhtarul Islam and Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Teachers' Association president Prof Mizanur Rahman, among others, were present in the meeting.
 
 Since July 1, the university teachers have been conducting a work stoppage demanding the scrapping of the Prottoy pension scheme.
