Flood situation starts improving in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA, July 14, 2024 (BSS) - With the fall of water level in all major rivers flowing through the district, flood situation started improving as flood affected people living on the shoals and river basin areas are still sufferings.

The official of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) sources said water level of the Brahmaputra river decreased by 8 cm in last 24 hours till 6 AM today.

Though the river's water decreased during the period, it was still flowing 10 cm above the danger level at Fulchharighat point.

Many flood victims who had taken shelter on flood control embankment and flood shelter centers with belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds have started going to their houses for improving flood situation.

The standing crops and summer vegetable have been damaged making the flood affected people more worried about their food security.

Deputy Director (DD) of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) here said agriculture crops on 6436 hectares of land owned by 66,800 farmers had gone under floodwater.

The crops of TK 76 crore produced on 3973 hectares of land had been damaged, he said.

The damaged crops included ropa Aus, jute, sesame, groundnut, maize, Aman seed bed, green chili, parble, eggplants, cucumber, lady's finger, he added.

To mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims, the government and non-government organizations including international donor organizations intensified the relief distribution aid to the affected families of the district, said an official of the DC office.
