Bangladesh is playing pioneering role in poverty alleviation: Tofazzel

DHAKA, July 14, 2024 (BSS) - Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Mohammad Tofazzel Hossain Miah today said Bangladesh is playing a pioneering role in poverty alleviation in the country.

Noting that Bangladesh is playing a pioneering role in the ongoing work on poverty alleviation around the world, he said: "The rates of poverty and extreme poverty in Bangladesh have decreased significantly in last 15 years due to effective roles of various pro-people and timely-measures of the government as well as the support of development agencies."

The Principal Secretary said these while addressing a national workshop titled 'National Workshop on PPEPP-EU Project' organized by Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) in the city's Agargaon area as the chief guest, a press release said.

One of the main goals of the Bangladesh government is to alleviate extreme poverty, he said, adding that and there is no alternative to long-term and sustainable activities to achieve this goal.

Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Bangladesh Charles Whiteley was present at the workshop as the guest of honor while Secretary of Financial Institutions Division (FID) of the Ministry of Finance Md Abdur Rahman Khan attended it as special guest, the release added.

Managing Director of PKSF Dr Nomita Halder gave the welcome speech on the occasion with Chairman of PKSF Professor Dr M Khairul Hossain in the chair.
