Vance says US should 'commit to the working man,' not Wall Street

MILWAUKEE, July 18, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Donald Trump's newly confirmed running mate J.D. Vance on Wednesday vowed to defend the interests of the working class if Republicans are voted back into the White House in November.

"We're done, ladies and gentlemen, catering to Wall Street. We'll commit to the working man," Vance said in his keynote speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The junior senator from Ohio also took aim at China, saying Beijing is trying enrich its citizens at the expense of Americans.

"We will protect the wages of American workers and stop the Chinese Communist Party from building their middle class on the backs of American citizens," he said.

American allies came in for criticism as well, with Vance saying there will be "no more free rides for nations that betray the generosity of the American taxpayer."

"Together, we will make sure our allies share in the burden of securing world peace."
