DHAKA, July 18, 2024 (BSS) - Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen today said the Bangladesh government and people have the capacity to solve their own 'internal' problem.

". . . our position is clear that we believe the government, the people of Bangladesh, have the capacity, wisdom to solve your own problems," he said.

He made the remark while responding to a question from a journalist on the ongoing quota reform movement, after emerging from a call on meeting with Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the foreign ministry office here.

Expressing hope that peace and stability will be restored very soon he said, what happened are "internal affairs of Bangladesh and definitely it is unfortunate".

"I believe it's an aspiration of all of us ... peace and stability are so important for China. Now is the right time for China to have more cooperation for more investment in Bangladesh," the envoy added.

During the meeting with foreign minister, the Chinese envoy said they discussed follow-up of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's recent visit to China.

Terming the Prime Minister's visit in China as "a tremendous success", he said, "It's a very constructive and productive visit, so now our focus is on follow-up measures".

Mentioning that a number of agreements, consensuses were made during the Prime Minister's visit and now both sides need to work hard to implement all these accords.

The envoy said next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and it will be the year for people-to-people exchanges between Bangladesh and China.

"We need to have a series of celebrations and functions, so next year we can see the highlight of the cooperation between China and Bangladesh," he said.

Answering to another query about Chinese financial support to Bangladesh, the envoy said, "We are going to provide a package of financial support, which the prime minister also mentioned, includes grants, interest-free loans, preparation loans and commercial loans. Altogether it will be around 2 billion US dollars".

"I believe this demonstrates our utmost support to Bangladesh, and I also believe this package will greatly boost our bilateral cooperation and also our support to Bangladesh's development," he added.
