NARAYANGANJ, July 25, 2024 (BSS) - Miscreants with sharp weapons launched arson attacks and damaged valuables of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) worth around Tk 50 crore during protests over quota reform movement.
"Miscreants attacked NCC building and set fire to the valuables during the quota reform movement on July 18-19," NCC Mayor Dr Selina Hayat Ivy told journalists here today.
She said that services of the birth and death registration along with water bills will continue after internet service restoration as server of the corporation was not damaged.
On July 18, sculpture of Bangabandhu installed in the mini park at Railway Gate No. 2 of the city was vandalized and trees were uprooted, she said.
The miscreants, Ivy said, also vandalized and set fire to Doel City Plaza-1 and 3, commercial buildings of the City Corporation at City Hall in Gymkhana area.
In the last two days, miscreants threw trees and flower tubs on the road divider of Nawab Salimullah Road from Chashahara to Nitaiganj and damaged road divider walls at different places.
The unruly people set ablaze four cars, 10 motorcycles, computers and furniture and looted a large quantity of medicines of the corporation sales center.
They also vandalized One Bank and City Bank branches located on Nagar Bhaban premises. Besides, miscreants vandalized and looted Ali Ahmad Chunka Nagar Library and Auditorium twice.
Such violent activities of the anti-liberation forces are unacceptable, she added.
"The attacks were pre-planned. Our security guards described that miscreants took a video of the building one day before it was set on fire," the mayor said.
The miscreants vandalized several services institutions including passport office.
