Asif Mahbub, Arif Sohail placed on remand over Setu Bhaban attack

Dhaka, July 29, 2024 (BSS) - A Dhaka court today granted six-day remand to former BRAC University teacher Asif Mahtab Utsho and coordinator of Jahangirnagar University quota reform movement Arif Sohail in connection with the attack on Setu Bhaban in the city's Banani.

Investigation officer of the case and DB inspector Abu Said Miah produced them before the court seeking 10-day remand against each of the accused, while their lawyers prayed for bail.

After hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mainul Islam denied the bail plea and granted six-day remand for each accused.

According to the case statement, during the recent quota reform protests, 250/300 unidentified people equipped with locally-made weapons stormed into Setu Bhaban situated in Banani on July 18 and carried out vandalism and arson attack there.

The attackers also beat officials and employees of Setu Bhaban. 

Rabiul Islam, caretaker of Setu Bhaban, filed a case with Banani Police Station on the same day.
