Brazil's Lula urges release of detailed Venezuela vote results

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 31, 2024 (BSS/AFP) - Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva urged Venezuelan authorities on Tuesday to release detailed vote tallies to prove Nicolas Maduro won a presidential election, while downplaying worries over the disputed poll as "normal."

"It is normal that there is a dispute," Lula said in an interview released Tuesday with a TV Globo affiliate, saying it could be "resolved" by releasing polling-station-level voting data, known in Spanish as "actas."

"If the actas raise doubts... the opposition enters an appeal," he said, adding that the courts' decision would ultimately be something "we have to abide by."
