CHATTOGRAM, Aug 3, 2024 (BSS) - The houses of Education Minister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Naufel and city Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury were attacked from the procession of anti-discrimination movement in port city this evening.
Besides, the office of Mohiuddin Bachchu, MP, was also vandalized and set on fire at around 6.30 pm.
Meanwhile, several police boxes and closed circuit (CC) cameras in the city were also demolished. Police and eyewitnesses said the vandalism took place on Saturday evening when the procession was passing different roads in the city after the protest meeting in the city's Newmarket area.
Thousands of people gathered in the city's Newmarket area on Saturday afternoon to protest as part of a program called by 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement'. They were going towards GEC junction via Tigerpass and Lalkhan Bazar.
The attackers have been started vandalizing the office of Member of Parliament of Chattogram-10 Constituency Mohiuddin Bachchu on the left side of the petrol pump on the way to Wasa Junction after crossing Lalkhan Bazar Amin Center. At that time they set fire to that office.
City AL General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin went there and visited the damaged office with Mohiuddin Bachchu after the incident.
CMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz told journalists that the office of Mohiuddin Bachchu was vandalized and set on fire.
"A few police boxes were also vandalized on the way from Newmarket to Bahaddarhat procession. I have come to know that our CCTV cameras have been broken in Newmarket area at 6 pm today," he added.
Kazi Md. Tarek Aziz said the attackers vandalized one of the gates of city mayor Reazaul Karim Chowdhury's residence at city's Bahaddarhat area by throwing the bricks and stones on the residence.
Education Minister's mother Begum Hasina Mohiuddin told BSS that her residence has been attacked at city's Mayor Goli in Chashmahill area. She said the doors and windows of her house have been vandalized by throwing bricks and stones. Two cars were also vandalized parked in front of the house at 7 pm today, she added.
"But they could not enter as the main gate was closed. At that time, the family members of the minister who were at home was panicked," she said.
