DHAKA, Aug 16, 2024 (BSS) - Coordinator of Anti-discriminatory Student Movement Sarjis Alam today said the incident on August 15, 1975 was merely a manifestation of the public's outrage against fascism, autocracy, and repression.
"What happened on 15th august in 1975 was the reflection of outrage of the whole nation against the suppression, fascism and autocracy of three previous years from 1973 to 1975. The people celebrated the day through sweet distribution across the country instead of observing mourn", said Sarjis.
"A handful of military officials could have not carried out the incident rather it was a collective effort against fascism", Sarjis told a press conference today in front of the Amar Ekushey Hall of Dhaka University.
The student leader said, "Awami League is facing the consequences of their deeds of the last 15 years. What is happening in the country centering August 15, it is not just for the 2024 uprising but it's the reflection of the people's anger against fascist regime".
"We saw sabotage carried out by the Awami fascist government in 2013 in Motijheel during Hefazat-e-Islam's protest rally. We still have those illustrated pictures and videos", said Sarjis.
Sarjis requested the students to go back to the classroom saying, "Now it's time for the students to go to their reading table and grow up as knowledgeable human resources as we need a well educated and intellectual young generation who will be contributing to take the country forward".
"The anti-discrimination student movement does not ask anyone to go and search residential hotels or other public and private property. We do not support them. We are not an authority but we are a pressure group who can raise voice against corrupt people, but we cannot force anyone to step down", Sarjis added.
