Two cases filed against ex-MP Shimul, others in Natore

NATORE, Aug 17, 2024 (BSS) - Two cases have been registered at Natore Police Station against former Member of Parliament (MP) from Natore-2 constituency (Natore Sadar and Naldanga) and District Awami League Vice-President Shafiqul Islam Shimul and his associates for attempting to commit murder.

Joint convener of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) district unit Farhad Ali Dewan Shahin and its member Saiful Islam Aftab filed the two cases at the Natore Police Station today.

In both the cases, former MP Shimul's younger brother Sajedul Islam Sagar, Natore Municipal Councilor Zahidur Rahman Zahid, Advocate Sayem Hossain Ujjal, Naldanga Municipal Councilor Mahtab Hossain, Jubo League leader Jamil Hossain Milan and three alleged top terrorists of the district Koel, his younger brothers Kanan and Salim alias Kutta Salim have been made accused.

According to the case statement, on March 13 this year, on the way back from the court of Natore, former member of parliament Shafiqul Islam Shimul and the accused came to the road in front of Natore road and highway office and attacked Farhad Ali Dewan Shahin. The assailants shot him three times in the legs and beat him severely, took away the white gold chain and cash from him and left him there thinking to be dead.

Along with the names of 24 people, 10-12 unknown people have been made accused in the case.

 On the other hand, Saiful Islam Aftab, the former president of the district Jubo Dal and member of the district BNP convening committee, said in the statement of the case that the accused, including ex-MP Shafiqul Islam Shimul, attacked him in the early hours of October 29 last year near his house in Station Bazar of the town. The assailants then shot him in the side of the spine and leg and cut him with sharp weapons.

A total of 14 people have been mentioned as accused in the case, including former MP Shimul, and 10-12 other unknown people.

After the incident, both the seriously injured were first admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. When the condition worsened there, they were shifted to PG Hospital in Dhaka.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Natore Police Station Mizanur Rahman Mizan confirmed the matter.
