Bullet injury makes lives devastated in Rajshahi hospital beds

RAJSHAHI, Aug 25, 2024 (BSS) - Bullet-hit students are in anxiety and frustration as they are undergoing treatment at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) being victims of anti-discrimination student movement turning to mass-uprising that toppled Sheikh Hasina-led government.

Families of the injured students feel proud of them calling their children as valiant and heroes as they only want their kids to get proper treatment to recover early.

RMCH sources said eight students sustained with bullet-wounds are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

All kinds of medicare support, including drugs, are being provided to them on behalf of the hospital making the patients and their guardian's satisfied.

On August 5, Muhammad Salman, 21, a student of Rajshahi Bangabandhu College, received bullet-wounds in Alupatty area.

Talking to BSS at RMCH on Saturday, he said, "The terrorists opened fire on the students from a revolver. At one stage, three students, including Salman, sustained wounds. A senior brother brought him to the hospital by his bicycle".

"I had remained in the movement since the initial stage," he added.

Rabiul Islam, father of Salman, said a surgical operation has been done but the bullet still remained in Salman's abdomen.

The doctors assured them of removing the bullet in the next operation.

He also said they are satisfied with the treatment and the hospital authority has been providing all sorts of medicare support free of cost.

Riad Hossain, 20, an HSC examinee from Godagari School and College, sustained bullet-wounds in his leg at Godagari crossing. Cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League opened fire on the agitating students indiscriminately around 11.30 am on August 5. He is now undergoing treatment at RMCH.

Dr Shanker Biswash, Emergency Medical Officer at RMCH, told BSS that the highest 125 students were admitted to their hospital with bullet-injuries on August 5.

As per the RMCH director's direction, the injured students are getting all sorts of medicare facilities, including drugs, free of cost.
A team of experienced doctors had been formed and discharged duties round the clock. All the departments concerned remained functional. At present, eight of them are undergoing treatment.

Nawshad Zaman, Rajshahi University Coordinator of Anti-discrimination Students Movement, said the leaders and workers of AL and its front organizations, particularly, Juba League and Chhatra League, equipped with firearms and lethal weapons were very much aggressive to resist the students-people movement at any cost.

Zaman also said they resorted to deadly attacks on the huge rally of students and people bound to Shaheb Bazar Zero point at Sagarpara and Alupatty areas killing many people and injuring scores on August 5.
