Australian envoy welcomes Prof Yunus's commitment to human rights

DHAKA, Aug 26, 2024 (BSS) - Acting Australian High Commissioner Nardia Simpson has praised a recent statement by Chief Adviser Prof Dr. Muhammad Yunus, which reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to national unity, universal human rights, and zero tolerance for discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, and political beliefs.

She made the remarks during a meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council Nirmol Rozario and Bhikkhu Sunandapriya at the Australian High Commission here today, according
to a press release issued by the mission.

During the meeting, they discussed the hopes and concerns of religious minority groups across Bangladesh.

"Australia is built on the foundation of diversity, multiculturalism, and tolerance. Mutual understanding between people and the appreciation of diverse cultures and forms of expression are core values for Australia," the statement from the Australian mission read.

Australia remains committed to upholding universal human rights and supports the fundamental role democracy plays in protecting these rights, it added.
