Tamanna conquers disability for education

DHAKA, August 28, 2024 (BSS) - Tamanna Akthar is not only a name but symbol of a fighter against disabilities and icon of pursuing education defeating her physical challenge.
 
She proved that just indomitable desire can defeat any barrier. So, without two hands and a leg, she is resolute to quest for her desired goal of study.     
 
Tamanna, a differently able girl, was born with serious physical disabilities that let her know about the extreme reality of society.
 
But physical disabilities could not bar her to start education like other children. As usual she learned how to write and draw with her left leg.
 
Physical barrier so far could not stop her come first in exams and she made it possible by writing with leg. Tamanna is moving forward winning her disability with great willingness and tireless efforts.
 
Tamanna, daughter of Rowshan Ali and Khadiza Parvin, lives at Panisara village in Jhikargacha upazila of Jashore district.
 
Ali is a small businessman and Parvin is a house wife. They have two daughters and a son. Tamanna is elder daughter of them.
 
Tamanna’s younger sister Mumtahina Rasmi is a student of class four while her brother Muhibul Taj is five-year-old.
 
Tamanna Akther said, “I wish to become a good human being and to be a doctor. I want to give services to people. My school teachers also help me a lot.”
 
Her mother Parvin said Tamanna was born on December 12 in 2003 with disability.
 
“After her birth, we were shocked. We firmly determined to groom her up like other normal children so that she doesn’t become burden of the society,” she said.
 
Parvin said, when we took decision to give her education, we firstly attached a pen between the toes of her lone leg. But it was not working. Then we gave a pen at her mouth. But, It also failed, Parvin added.
 
She said, after few days we gave a pen at her leg again and went to a non-government school to admit her. But the school authority denied admitting her for her disability. Later, we requested a female teacher to teach her for only two months.
 
After two months, Tamanna was admitted to Bakra Azmaine Adus School. Only after two months of her admission in the school she learned how to write with leg. She passed Primary Education Certificate successfully, securing GPA-5 with scholarship.
 
Azmaine Adus School Principal Farhan Afroze said without any additional tutorial from any teacher Tamanna stood first in all classes.
 
Khadiza Parvin said Tamanna was admitted to Bakra Jonab Ali Khan High School after passing primary. She also achieved GPA-5 in Junior School Certificate exam. Now she is reading at class XII with science.
 
Tamnna has extraordinary qualifications, Parvin said, adding, “But we have no ability to bear her expenses.”
 
Tamanna’s father Rowsan Ali said, “I can’t do my work properly for Tamanna as she needs extra care. Her mother is busy with household works and we have also two other children”.
 
Tamanna’s school Headmaster Md Helal Uddin said Tamanna became first in every class. Her writing is clear and her artwork is also excellent, he added.
