LAKSHMIPUR, Aug 28, 2024 (BSS) - The food situation in Lakshmipur has worsened due to persistent rainfall and a rise in the water level of rivers, leaving hundreds of thousands of people marooned.
People living in the district are rushing to different shelter centres and safer places.
Water levels in surrounding rivers of the district increased due to onrush of water from Noakhali district and heavy rainfall since last evening, deteriorating the overall flood situation in several unions including Mandari, Dattapara, Dighli and Bangakha under Sadar upazila of the district.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Suraiya Jahan said, the district administration, various political and social organizations including the students of the anti-discrimination student movement, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of the district, leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami of the district, voluntary organizations have distributed relief materials among the flood victims people of the district.
The DC said that 7 lakh 23 thousand people in the district are currently in water-tight condition. So far 28,400 people have taken shelter in the various centres.
The DC said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has already provided Taka 10 lakh, 1076 tonnes of rice, Taka 5 lakh for baby food and Taka 5 lakh for cow food. Already cash Taka and 789 tonnes of rice have been distributed among the flood victims of the district.
