DPHE distributes 1.5 lakh litre safe drinking water in flood-hit areas

DHAKA, Aug 28, 2024 (BSS) - The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) has distributed 148,909 litres of safe drinking water so far in the flood-hit areas through its mobile water treatment plants.
 
The eight mobile water treatment plants - five in Feni, and one each in Moulvibazar, Noakhali and Cumilla were stationed temporarily, said a press release today.

It said that dry food was distributed among 65,253 people in the flood-hit areas on Wednesday through various local government institutions under the local government division.

Besides, some 177,328 people have been rescued while food has been distributed to 133,075 people in shelters.

The release said that all offices, organizations and institutions under the Local Government Division of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives are working to ensure civic amenities in flood-affected areas.

It is also working to keep shelters ready, maintaining uninterrupted road connectivity across the country and speedy repair of damaged roads.

In addition, the DPHE is working to ensure safe drinking water and sanitation in flood-hit areas.

According to the information available today, some 37,02,000 water purification tablets have been distributed from local government division in 11 flood-hit districts.

Besides, 23,887 jerrycans were distributed alongside 4,126 hygiene kits with the help of UNICEF.

According to LGED data, a total of 7,438 km of roads and 1,095 bridges/culverts have been primarily affected by floods caused by recent heavy rains and landslides. So far, 51 km of roads and 96 bridges/culverts have been repaired by LGED.

The release said that flood situation has improved in Habiganj, Khagrachari, Feni, Chattogram, Rangamati and Brahmanbaria districts, while worsened in Cumilla and Noakhali districts. However, flood situation has remained stable in Sunamganj, Laxmipur and Moulvibazar districts.
